the Spinning Top
Early History
Spinning tops have a long and storied history. Often among the oldest recognizable toys found on archaeological sites, spinning tops originated independently in cultures all over the world. One of the earliest examples of spinning tops was discovered in Iraq dating back to the 35th century BC. These early tops were likely fabricated from maple seeds and impaled fruit.
The spinning top remains popular throughout the world and has undergone continued development. While primarily still used as toys, modern spinning tops have also attracted adults. Some tops are made of fine materials and crafted to exacting tolerances that make them perform as good as they look. And innovations such as nesting, launchers, battle modes, levitation with magnets, etc. have created a new generation of spinning tops.
